A Connection between Austin, Texas & Madison, WI

Austin, TX and Madison, WI have a surprising number of similarities, despite the hundreds of miles that exist between them. And there is more to it than both only being their state’s capital – they both have economies rooted in part from the tech industry, both are beacons of education, and both have a firm standing in art. It is no surprise then, with so much to give back to their residents, that both cities appear amongst list of the most desirable places to live nationwide.

Education

Madison has quite a lot to offer to its occupants in terms of educational opportunities, and was ranked by Forbes magazine as the number two position of top education cities in the nation. In fact, 50,000 of its residents attend the many different colleges and technical institutes in the city, including University of Wisconsin-Madison, Edgewood College, Madison Media Institute and Madison Area Technical College.

Education is also put at a premium in Austin. Researchers at the Central Connecticut State University have ranked the city as the 23rd most literate city nationwide. Also, the city has been named “America’s #1 College Town” by the Travel Channel. Institutions in Austin include The University of Texas, Concordia University, Austin Community College, & St. Edward’s University.

Austin, TX and Madison, Wisconsin Economies

While Madison’s economy has once been dominated by government positions and those in the education arena, the city’s economy is becoming increasingly dependent upon consumer services and technology. Austin, opposingly, has long been considered a hub for technology, while both cities are becoming increasingly involved in biotechnology. In fact, Austin is host to about 85 different companies in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical fields, making it the twelfth most important biotech and life center in the US as ranked by the Milken Institute.

Madison & Austin for Arts & Culture

Madison and Austin are both home to an exhilarant arts and culture scene, with Austin’s official slogan being The Live Music Capital of the World. It’s also home to the annual Austin Film Festival as well as numerous other cultural events each year. Madison is also home to a number of music festivals as well as a variety of art museums. Due to its rich cultural opportunities and its low crime rate and low unemployment rate, Madison has been ranked by Money magazine as the top place nationwide to live in 1996. Every year since then, it has ranked near the top of the list. In 2006, Austin grabbed the #2 spot on the same list.

Despite having so much to offer to their occupants, both Austin and Madison still somehow are able to offer homes that are fairly priced. It’s no wonder both cities continue to grow so rapidly in terms of people as well as commercial opportunities!
